Kabah Archaeological Zone

Deep in the Puuc hills of Yucatán, Kabah is a Maya archaeological site that rewards those who venture off the main tourist trail. Its name means 'the powerful hand' in Maya, and the site is dominated by the spectacular Palace of the Masks, its facade covered in hundreds of stone mosaic masks of the rain god Chaac. With fewer crowds than nearby Uxmal, Kabah offers a more intimate encounter with ancient Maya architecture and the dense jungle that surrounds it.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the main structures at a relaxed pace. Kabah is compact, so you can see the highlights without rushing. Combine it with a morning at Uxmal (20 minutes away) and perhaps a stop at the lesser-known ruins of Sayil or Labná in the afternoon. Arrive early to beat the heat and the tour buses that start arriving around 10am.
