Jinan, the capital of Shandong province, is known as the 'City of Springs' for its hundreds of natural artesian springs that bubble up within the urban landscape. This ancient city blends a rich cultural heritage with modern Chinese life, offering travelers a chance to explore classical gardens, Buddhist grottoes, and a vibrant food scene centered on local delicacies like sweet and sour carp and Jinan's famous spicy soup. The city's relaxed pace and walkable spring-water parks make it an ideal stop on a self-drive itinerary through eastern China.
Highlights & What to See
- Baotu Spring Park – The most famous of Jinan's springs, where crystal-clear water surges from three outlets, surrounded by pavilions and weeping willows. It's the city's iconic sight.
- Daming Lake – A scenic lake with willow-lined shores, lotus blossoms in summer, and historic pavilions. Rent a boat or stroll the causeways for classic Jinan views.
- Thousand Buddha Mountain (Qianfo Shan) – A hillside complex of ancient Buddhist statues and temples, with panoramic views over the city. The grottoes date back to the Sui dynasty.
- Shandong Provincial Museum – One of China's largest museums, housing artifacts from the Neolithic Longshan culture to Ming and Qing ceramics. A must for history buffs.
- Quancheng Square – The city's central plaza, featuring a huge music fountain and the landmark 'Spring' sculpture. A great spot for people-watching at dusk.
- Wulongtan (Five Dragon Pool) Park – A quieter spring cluster with five dragon-headed spouts and a charming traditional garden, less crowded than Baotu Spring.
