Jerusalem, the spiritual heart of the Middle East, is a city where ancient history and modern life collide in a sensory whirlwind. For the Australian traveller, it offers an immersion into millennia of culture, religion, and politics, all within a compact, walkable city. Expect bustling markets, serene gardens, and a palpable sense of the sacred — but also a vibrant café scene and a surprising nightlife. This is a place to explore with an open mind and comfortable shoes.
Highlights & What to See
- Old City & its Quarters — Walk the ramparts and lose yourself in the labyrinthine alleys of the Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Armenian quarters. The Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and Dome of the Rock are non-negotiable.
- Yad Vashem — Israel's official Holocaust memorial museum is a profound, moving experience. Allow at least two hours.
- Mahane Yehuda Market — By day a bustling fruit and spice market; by night a lively hub of bars, restaurants, and street food. Try a fresh pomegranate juice or a sabich sandwich.
- Mount of Olives — Offers the best panoramic view of the Old City. Visit the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of All Nations.
- Israel Museum — Home to the Dead Sea Scrolls and an incredible collection of art and archaeology. The model of Second Temple Jerusalem is a highlight.
- Ein Karem — A picturesque village neighbourhood with beautiful churches, art galleries, and excellent cafés. A peaceful escape from the city bustle.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers find 3–4 days ideal for Jerusalem, allowing two days for the Old City and its holy sites, one for Yad Vashem and the Israel Museum, and a final day to explore neighbourhoods like Ein Karem or the German Colony. If you have less time, a whirlwind two-day itinerary can cover the essentials: dedicate one full day to the Old City and another to a mix of Yad Vashem and the market. Pace yourself — the intensity of the city can be overwhelming, and you'll want time to sit in a café and absorb the atmosphere.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Bethlehem — Just 10 km south, the birthplace of Jesus. Visit the Church of the Nativity and the Shepherds' Field. Note that it is in the Palestinian Authority, so a passport check is involved.
- Dead Sea — A 45-minute drive east. Float in the hyper-saline water and cover yourself in mineral mud. Combine with a stop at Masada for a full day trip.
- Tel Aviv — One hour west, this modern coastal city offers a completely different vibe: beaches, Bauhaus architecture, and a world-class food scene. Perfect for a contrasting urban experience.
- Jericho — One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, in the Palestinian Authority. See the Mount of Temptation and ancient ruins.
- Nazareth — About 1.5 hours north, known for the Basilica of the Annunciation and its lively Arab market. A good day trip for those interested in Christian history.
