Ilha Grande, a lush, car-free island off Brazil's Costa Verde, is a paradise of Atlantic rainforest, deserted beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Once a leper colony and later a high-security prison, the island is now a protected state park, offering some of the most pristine nature and hiking trails in Rio de Janeiro state. With no roads or cars, the only way to get around is by foot or boat, making it a perfect escape for eco-travelers and adventure seekers.
Highlights & What to See
- Lopes Mendes Beach – Consistently ranked among Brazil's best beaches, this 3km stretch of powdery white sand and turquoise surf is a must for sunbathers and surfers alike.
- Praia do Aventureiro – A stunning, crescent-shaped beach with calm waters, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. It's also a traditional caiçara fishing village, offering a glimpse into local island life.
- Pico do Papagaio – The island's highest peak (990m) rewards hikers with panoramic views of the entire island and the bay. The challenging 6-hour round trip is best started early in the morning.
- Lagoa Azul & Lagoa Verde – These calm, emerald-green lagoons are perfect for snorkeling among colorful fish. Boat tours often combine them with stops at nearby beaches.
- Vila do Abraão – The island's main village, a charming cluster of colorful houses, pousadas, and restaurants. It's the hub for boat trips and hiking trailheads.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience Ilha Grande, plan at least 3–4 days. This allows time for a challenging hike (like Pico do Papagaio), a full-day boat tour to remote beaches and lagoons, and a lazy day at Lopes Mendes. If you have only 2 days, focus on the Abraão area and a boat trip to the southern beaches. Don't try to do too much – the island's charm lies in its slow pace.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Paraty – A beautifully preserved colonial town with cobblestone streets, whitewashed churches, and a vibrant arts scene. It's a 2-hour bus and ferry ride from Ilha Grande.
- Trindade – A laid-back beach village with excellent surfing and hiking, just a short bus ride from Paraty. Perfect for a few days of beach-hopping.
- Angra dos Reis – The mainland gateway to Ilha Grande, with a historic center and over 300 islands to explore. Worth a stop for its boat tours and seafood restaurants.
- Rio de Janeiro – About 3 hours by bus and ferry, Rio is the natural starting or ending point for a Costa Verde trip. Don't miss Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer.
