Ile De La Barthelasse
Ile de la Barthelasse is a peaceful island in the Rhône River, just a short walk from Avignon's city walls. Known as Europe's largest urban island, it's a green oasis of farmland, orchards, and riverside paths that feels a world away from the medieval bustle. Locals cycle here for picnics, kayak along the river, and linger at guinguettes (open-air cafés) with views of the Palais des Papes. It's the perfect antidote to a day of sightseeing.
Highlights & What to See
- Cycle the island – Rent a bike and explore the flat, car-free lanes that weave through vegetable plots, sunflower fields, and poplar groves. The entire loop is about 10 km and takes under an hour.
- Guinguette culture – Stop at one of the riverside guinguettes like Chez Moustache or Le Canotier for a pastis or a simple lunch of grilled sausage and salad, with the Pont d'Avignon as your backdrop.
- Kayak or paddleboard – Rent a kayak from the base near the Pont Daladier and paddle along the Rhône's gentle current, passing under the famous broken bridge.
- Farm shops – Buy fresh produce, honey, and local wine from the island's small farms – the cherries in spring and melons in summer are exceptional.
- Nature walks – Follow the sentier de l'île along the riverbank for birdwatching and quiet views of Avignon's skyline.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal – arrive in the late morning, cycle or walk the island, have a leisurely lunch at a guinguette, and then kayak back or simply relax by the water. If you're short on time, even a two-hour stroll from the Avignon centre to the nearest guinguette is worth it for the view. Pair this with a morning at the Palais des Papes for a perfect full day.
