Rising from the arid plains of South Australia’s outback, the Ikara-Flinders Ranges are a dramatic landscape of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges, and vast salt lakes. This is Country of the Adnyamathanha people, whose stories are etched into the land. Here you can walk through time, from 650-million-year-old fossils to historic settler ruins, under some of the darkest night skies in Australia.
Highlights & What to See
- Wilpena Pound (Ikara) – A natural amphitheatre of craggy peaks, best seen from a scenic flight or the challenging St Mary Peak hike (full day). The Adnyamathanha name Ikara means ‘meeting place’.
- Bunyeroo & Brachina Gorges – Drive through these ancient river valleys to spot red and yellow-tailed black cockatoos, euros (wallaroos), and the rare yellow-footed rock-wallaby.
- Sacred Canyon – A short walk leads to Adnyamathanha rock art, including ochre hand stencils and animal motifs, with interpretive signage explaining their cultural significance.
- Rawnsley Park Station – A working sheep station offering quad bike tours, guided walks, and the chance to taste outback hospitality over a campfire dinner.
- Flinders Ranges Way – The scenic drive from Quorn to Blinman passes through historic towns, with lookouts over the vast plains and ranges.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to tackle one major hike (like St Mary Peak), explore the gorges by 4WD, and enjoy a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound. If you have only a day, focus on the Bunyeroo-Brachina loop and a walk at Sacred Canyon. For a deeper experience, add a fourth day to visit the remote Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary or the ghost town of Farina.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Quorn – Historic railway town and gateway to the ranges, home to the Pichi Richi Railway steam train.
- Hawker – Friendly outpost with the excellent Jeff Morgan Gallery showcasing local landscapes and Adnyamathanha art.
- Blinman – Australia’s highest town (by altitude), with a historic underground mine tour and a great pub.
- Lake Torrens – A vast salt lake visible from the air; 4WD tracks lead to its edge for surreal, empty vistas.
- Parachilna – Tiny hamlet with the iconic Prairie Hotel, famous for its ‘Feral Mixed Grill’ (kangaroo, camel, emu).
