Rising from the arid plains of South Australia’s outback, the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park is a dramatic landscape of ancient mountains, rust-red gorges, and sweeping valleys. Known as Ikara (meaning ‘meeting place’) to the Adnyamathanha people, this park offers a profound sense of timelessness and raw beauty. Whether you’re hiking through Wilpena Pound, spotting yellow-footed rock-wallabies, or stargazing under some of the darkest skies in Australia, this is a destination that rewards adventurers and culture seekers alike.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To do the park justice, set aside at least two full days – three if you want to hike to the top of St Mary Peak (a strenuous 8–10 hour return) or explore the gorges at a relaxed pace. Most visitors base themselves at Wilpena Pound Resort (inside the park) or the nearby town of Hawker. A self-drive loop from Adelaide via the Clare Valley makes a fantastic 5–7 day road trip.
