Imagine stepping onto a remote island where time slows down, the air smells of sea salt and wild herbs, and the only sounds are waves lapping against ancient rock formations. Tung Ping Chau, part of Hong Kong's UNESCO Global Geopark, is a geological wonderland of sedimentary rock layers, sea caves, and dramatic cliffs – a world away from the city's neon buzz.
Highlights & What to See
- Lai Chi Wo – a restored Hakka walled village with traditional houses, a charming pier, and a small café serving local snacks.
- Lung Mei (Dragon's Back) – a stunning coastal hike along the island's spine, offering panoramic views of the sea and the distinctive layered rock formations.
- Kau Lau Wan – a secluded beach with crystal-clear water, perfect for a refreshing dip after the hike.
- Sea Caves and Rock Formations – explore the island's dramatic coastline, where the sea has carved arches, blowholes, and honeycomb patterns into the ancient sandstone.

- Sunset at the Viewing Platform – end the day watching the sun sink into the South China Sea from the island's western tip.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day on Tung Ping Chau – arrive on the morning ferry from Ma Liu Shui, hike the 6-km loop trail (about 3 hours at a leisurely pace), snorkel at Kau Lau Wan, and catch the late afternoon ferry back. If you want to stay overnight, there are a few basic guesthouses, but book well in advance. The island is best visited from October to April when the weather is cooler and the skies are clear.
