Tung Chung, on the northwestern coast of Lantau Island, is Hong Kong’s gateway to nature and adventure. Once a sleepy fishing village, it’s now a transport hub with the airport and Ngong Ping 360 cable car, yet it retains a raw, rugged charm. The area offers a striking contrast: sleek malls and high-rises sit beside ancient temples, hiking trails, and the vast South China Sea. It’s the perfect base for exploring Lantau’s wild side without sacrificing modern comforts.
Highlights & What to See
- Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car – A 25-minute ride over the bay and mountains, offering jaw-dropping views of the airport, the sea, and the iconic Tian Tan Buddha. Go early to avoid queues.
- Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) & Po Lin Monastery – The 34-metre bronze Buddha is a spiritual landmark. Climb the 268 steps for panoramic views and explore the monastery’s serene gardens and vegetarian eatery.
- Tung Chung Fort – A Qing dynasty coastal fort built to combat piracy. It’s a quiet, atmospheric spot with old cannons and a small museum.
- Tai O Fishing Village – A short bus ride away, this stilt-house community is Lantau’s answer to Venice. Wander the narrow lanes, sample shrimp paste, and take a boat trip to see pink dolphins.
- Lantau Trail – The section from Tung Chung to Tai O (about 15 km) is a superb day hike through forests, past waterfalls, and along the coast. It’s moderately challenging but incredibly rewarding.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day here: start with the cable car to Ngong Ping in the morning (allow 2–3 hours for the Buddha and monastery), then head to Tai O for lunch and exploration (2–3 hours). If you’re hiking the Lantau Trail, dedicate a full day to the walk and skip the cable car. For a relaxed pace, consider an overnight stay in Tung Chung to catch sunrise over the mountains or sunset at the beach.
