To Kwa Wan, a densely packed neighbourhood on the Kowloon Peninsula, is one of Hong Kong's most authentic and under-the-radar districts. Unlike the polished malls of Tsim Sha Tsui, To Kwa Wan thrums with raw local life: narrow streets lined with old-school eateries, traditional trades, and a palpable sense of community. Recent MTR extensions have made it more accessible, but it remains largely off the tourist trail – perfect for travellers who want to experience the city's gritty, everyday soul. The area is a treasure trove of Hong Kong's industrial heritage, with a growing arts scene and some of the best street food in the city.
Highlights & What to See
- To Kwa Wan Market – A sprawling wet market where you can watch fishmongers, butchers, and vegetable vendors at work. It's a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells, and a window into local food culture.
- Ma Tau Wai Road Street Art – A cluster of colourful murals painted on building walls and shutters, part of a community revitalisation project. Look out for works by local and international artists.
- Hai Tan Street Food Stalls – This street is famous for its dai pai dong (open-air cooked-food stalls). Try the silky tofu pudding, curry fish balls, and egg waffles – all staples of Hong Kong's street food scene.
- Tin Hau Temple (To Kwa Wan) – A small but atmospheric temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea, tucked away amid residential blocks. It's a peaceful spot for a moment of calm.
- Kowloon City Ferry Pier – A short walk away, this pier offers cheap ferry rides across Victoria Harbour to North Point. The journey provides stunning skyline views and a breezy escape from the streets.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to soak up the neighbourhood's character. Start your morning at the market, then explore the street art and temples. Dedicate an hour for lunch at the food stalls or a local cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style café). If you're a keen photographer or foodie, you could easily stretch it to a full day, especially if you combine it with a ferry ride. To Kwa Wan works well as a morning or afternoon excursion from central Kowloon.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kowloon City – Just a 10-minute walk away, this area is famous for its Thai restaurants and the remnants of the old Kai Tak airport. Great for a dinner detour.
- Hung Hom – A neighbouring district with the Hung Hom Promenade, a lovely waterfront walkway, and the Hong Kong Coliseum. Also known for its seafood restaurants.
- Sham Shui Po – A short MTR ride west, this is another authentic neighbourhood with electronics markets, fabric shops, and excellent street food. Perfect for a full-day Kowloon exploration.
- North Point (via ferry) – Take the ferry from To Kwa Wan to North Point on Hong Kong Island. This older district has a nostalgic charm, with traditional markets and a waterfront promenade.
