Hong Kong Sha Ten Thousand Buddhas
Perched on a hillside in Sha Tin, the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is a hidden gem that rewards visitors with a serene escape from Hong Kong's urban buzz. Despite its name, it's not a single monastery but a complex of pavilions, halls, and pagodas, all connected by a steep, winding path lined with life-sized golden Buddha statues. The climb is invigorating, and the panoramic views of Sha Tin and the surrounding mountains are spectacular.
Highlights & What to See
- The Buddha-lined Path: The ascent begins with over 400 golden Buddha statues, each in a unique pose, leading you up through lush greenery.
- The Main Hall: Inside, you'll find thousands of miniature Buddha figurines lining the walls, creating a mesmerizing golden glow. The centrepiece is a large, serene Buddha statue.
- The Nine-Dragon Wall: A colourful ceramic wall featuring nine dragons, a classic Chinese motif that makes for great photos.
- The Pagoda: A seven-storey pagoda offering sweeping views of the New Territories and, on clear days, as far as Shenzhen.
- The Temple Cats: Friendly resident cats often laze around the complex, adding to the peaceful atmosphere.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate about 1.5 to 2 hours for the visit, including the 15-20 minute climb. The site is compact but rich in detail, so take your time to explore each hall. Early morning visits are best to avoid the heat and crowds, and to catch the soft light filtering through the trees.
