Escape the skyscraper canyons of Hong Kong for a day on Tap Mun Island, a grassy, car-free outpost in the northeastern New Territories. Known locally as Grass Island, this tiny speck is a world apart: wild cattle roam the hillsides, traditional fishing villages cling to the shore, and the South China Sea stretches endlessly to the horizon. Sai Kung, the gateway town, is a laid-back harbour of seafood restaurants and hiking trails, making the journey here an adventure in itself.
Highlights & What to See
- Grassland Wander: Follow the island's walking trail across open, cow-dotted meadows to the northern tip, where you're rewarded with panoramic sea views and the chance to spot kites and eagles riding the thermals.
- Tap Mun Fishermen's Village: Explore the weathered lanes of the village, with its Tin Hau Temple (dedicated to the goddess of the sea), drying seafood racks, and a handful of family-run stalls selling squid jerky and cold drinks.
- Tap Mun Rock & 'Monster' Rock: Look for the distinctive balancing rock formation on the east coast and the oddly-shaped 'Monster Rock' – both are prime photo stops.
- Sai Kung Town: Before or after your island trip, soak up the vibe of Sai Kung's waterfront, where you can browse the fish market, hire a sampan, or feast on freshly caught seafood at a floating restaurant.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore Tap Mun's loop trail and village, but to truly unwind, plan for a full day. Catch an early kaito (ferry) from Sai Kung or Wong Shek Pier, spend three to four hours hiking and picnicking on the island, then return to Sai Kung for a late lunch or sunset drink. If you're a keen photographer or hiker, you could easily linger longer – the island's quiet beauty rewards a slow pace.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Sai Kung Country Parks: Tackle the MacLehose Trail or kayak among the sea arches and sea caves of the eastern coast.
- Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau): A short kaito ride from Sai Kung, this slender island offers a tombolo beach and clear waters perfect for snorkelling.
- Plover Cove Country Park: Hike the Plover Cove Reservoir trail or the challenging Pat Sin Leng ridge for spectacular views over the Tolo Channel.
- Hong Kong Global Geopark: Explore the hexagonal volcanic rock columns and sea stacks of the northeastern islands on a boat tour from Ma Liu Shui or Wong Shek.
