Tai Long Wan (Big Wave Bay) is a stunning crescent of golden sand on the eastern coast of the Sai Kung Peninsula, a world away from Hong Kong’s urban frenzy. This remote beach is a reward for hikers who traverse the scenic MacLehose Trail or brave a bumpy boat ride from Sai Kung Town. With its powerful surf, lush green hills, and a laid-back vibe, it’s a slice of tropical paradise that feels like a secret. The area is part of the Sai Kung East Country Park, known for its rugged coastline, clear waters, and traditional fishing villages.
Highlights & What to See
- Tai Long Wan Beach – The main beach is a spectacular stretch of fine sand, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and surfing. The waves can be strong, so heed warning flags.
- MacLehose Trail Section 2 – This iconic hiking trail offers breathtaking views of the bay from above, winding through hills, forests, and past the hamlet of Ham Tin. The full section from Pak Tam Au to Chek Keng takes about 4–5 hours.
- Ham Tin Wan – A smaller, quieter beach just south of Tai Long Wan, accessible via a short coastal path. It has a few rustic restaurants serving seafood and drinks.
- Sai Kung Town – The gateway to the area, this lively waterfront town is famous for its seafood restaurants, boat trips, and weekend markets. Don’t miss the chance to sample fresh catch at a dai pai dong (open-air stall).
- Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau) – A short ferry ride from Sai Kung, this island offers clear waters, a tombolo (sandbar) that appears at low tide, and excellent snorkelling.
Suggested Time to Spend
To fully appreciate Tai Long Wan, plan a full day. Start early with a hike on the MacLehose Trail (allow 3–5 hours for a round trip from Sai Kung), then spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach and enjoying a seafood lunch at Ham Tin. If you’re short on time, a half-day trip by taxi or boat from Sai Kung Town is possible, but you’ll miss the best coastal views. For a more immersive experience, consider camping overnight at the designated campsite near the beach – just bring all supplies, as facilities are basic.
