Pat Sin Leng, or the 'Eight Immortals Ridge,' is a dramatic mountain range in Hong Kong's northeastern New Territories, offering some of the territory's most rewarding hiking. Named after the Eight Immortals of Taoist mythology, the ridge's eight peaks rise steeply from the coast, providing panoramic views over Plover Cove, the Tolo Channel, and the distant Shenzhen skyline. This is a place for serious walkers who want to escape the city's hustle and experience Hong Kong's wilder side, with rugged trails, lush vegetation, and a sense of remote adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Pat Sin Leng Country Trail – A challenging 6.5 km ridgeline walk that traverses all eight peaks, with steep ascents and descents rewarded by sweeping coastal views. Best tackled early morning to avoid heat and crowds.
- Plover Cove Reservoir – One of Hong Kong's largest freshwater reservoirs, visible from the ridge. The surrounding country park offers quieter trails and picnic spots.
- Bride's Pool – A scenic waterfall and plunge pool at the base of the range, perfect for a cool-down after the hike. Legend says a bride drowned here, giving it a poignant name.
- Luk Keng Village – A traditional Hakka village near the trailhead, with old walled houses and a peaceful rural atmosphere. A great place to start or end your walk.
- Wu Kau Tang – A remote village with a historic temple and access to the nearby Lai Chi Wo, one of Hong Kong's best-preserved Hakka settlements.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan a full day for the Pat Sin Leng hike. The ridge traverse itself takes 4–5 hours at a steady pace, but factor in travel time from central Hong Kong (about 1 hour by MTR and bus), plus breaks for photos and lunch. Most walkers start from the Tai Mei Tuk area and finish near Bride's Pool. If you want to explore the villages or Plover Cove, add another 2–3 hours. The trail is exposed and can be hot; avoid midday sun in summer.
