Hong Kong Outlying Islands
Escape the neon-lit frenzy of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and you'll find the Outlying Islands: a scattering of over 260 islands where life slows to a coastal rhythm. Here, traditional fishing villages, empty beaches, and hiking trails with views of the South China Sea await. The most accessible are Lantau, Cheung Chau, Lamma, and Peng Chau, each with its own distinct character. Ferries from Central whisk you to a different world in under an hour.
Highlights & What to See
- Lantau Island — Home to the Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) and Po Lin Monastery, plus the Ngong Ping 360 cable car for sweeping views. Hike Lantau Peak or explore the stilt houses of Tai O fishing village.
- Cheung Chau — A car-free island famous for its bun-snatching festival (Cheung Chau Bun Festival), with a lively harbour, temples, and good seafood restaurants. Walk to the headland for sunset.
- Lamma Island — A laid-back, hippie-ish enclave with hiking trails between Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan. Stop for seafood and swim at Lo So Shing Beach.
- Peng Chau — Tiny and off the tourist radar, with a peaceful village, old temples, and the Finger Hill walk offering panoramic views.
- Shek O — On the southeastern tip of Hong Kong Island, this village and beach feel like an outlying island. Great for a swim and a beer at the seaside café.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily do a day trip to one or two islands, but to truly unwind, spend 2–3 days exploring Lantau and a smaller island. A classic itinerary: day one on Lantau (Big Buddha and Tai O), day two on Cheung Chau or Lamma. Ferries run regularly, so you can mix and match. For a slower pace, base yourself on Lamma or Cheung Chau for a night or two.
