Mui Wo, the main ferry gateway to Lantau Island, offers a refreshing escape from Hong Kong's urban intensity. This laid-back coastal village is framed by lush hills, a long sandy beach, and a grid of sleepy streets lined with old village houses and seafood restaurants. It's the perfect starting point for exploring Lantau's wilder side.
Highlights & What to See
- Silvermine Bay Beach – A wide, sandy beach with calm waters, ideal for a swim or a stroll at sunset. The beachfront promenade is dotted with benches and small eateries.
- Silver Mine Cave & Waterfall – A short, steep hike from the village leads to an abandoned silver mine and a cascading waterfall. The cave is dark and slippery, so bring a torch.
- Mui Wo Market – A lively wet market selling fresh seafood, produce, and local snacks. Try the famous Mui Wo rice rolls or a bowl of wonton noodles.
- Lantau Trail (Section 12) – The trailhead is right in Mui Wo, offering a scenic 9 km hike to Pui O or even further to the giant Buddha at Ngong Ping. The path winds through forests, over ridges, and past abandoned villages.
- Trappist Haven Monastery – A serene monastery run by Trappist monks, known for their dairy products and quiet retreats. Visitors can buy homemade cheese, bread, and honey.
Suggested Time to Spend
Mui Wo can be explored in a half-day, but it's best as a full-day trip if you plan to hike or relax on the beach. Arrive in the morning, wander the village and market, then hike to the waterfall or up to the monastery. After a seafood lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants, spend the afternoon swimming or walking the Lantau Trail. Ferries back to Central run until late, so you can easily catch the sunset before leaving.
