Perched high on Lantau Island, Ngong Ping is a cultural and spiritual hub that feels a world away from Hong Kong’s skyscraper jungle. The centrepiece is the Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha), an awe-inspiring bronze statue sitting serenely above the Po Lin Monastery. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car delivers a dazzling 25-minute journey over the South China Sea and lush mountains, offering panoramic views that set the stage for a day of exploration. This is a place where ancient traditions meet modern accessibility, with a purpose-built village that introduces visitors to Chinese architecture and culture through interactive exhibits and shops.
Highlights & What to See
- Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) – Climb the 268 steps to stand at the base of this 34-metre-tall bronze statue, one of the world’s largest seated Buddhas. The serene expression and the sweeping views of Lantau make the ascent worthwhile.
- Po Lin Monastery – A living Buddhist monastery founded in 1906. Explore its ornate halls, tranquil gardens and the Grand Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas, where golden statues line the walls.
- Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car – The journey itself is a highlight. Choose between standard cabins and the glass-bottom Crystal Cabin for a thrilling ride over Tung Chung Bay and the mountainous terrain.
- Wisdom Path – A short, contemplative walk featuring 38 wooden pillars inscribed with verses from the Heart Sutra. Set against the backdrop of Lantau’s peaks, it’s a photographer’s dream.
- Ngong Ping Village – A themed village with a mix of dining, souvenir shops and cultural attractions like the “Walking with Buddha” multimedia show and the “Monkey’s Tale” theatre.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a half-day (around 4–5 hours) sufficient to experience the main attractions, including the cable car ride, the Buddha, the monastery and a leisurely stroll through the village. To avoid crowds, arrive early (the cable car opens at 10am) and plan to visit the Buddha before lunch. If you’re keen on hiking Lantau Peak or exploring more remote trails, allocate a full day and pack sturdy shoes.
