Tung Chung Town
Rising from the edge of Lantau Island, Tung Chung is a modern town with a dramatic setting between mountains and sea. Once a sleepy fishing village, it now serves as the gateway to Hong Kong’s wilder side, with the Ngong Ping 360 cable car climbing to the Tian Tan Buddha, and the North Lantau Country Park offering rugged trails. The town itself blends high-rise living with remnants of its past — look for the 19th-century Tung Chung Fort and the waterfront promenade where ferries chug to Tai O. For travellers, it’s a practical base for exploring Lantau’s cultural and natural highlights, with efficient MTR and bus connections to Hong Kong Island.
