Tap Mun, also known as Grass Island, is a serene escape from Hong Kong’s urban intensity. This windswept outcrop in the northeastern New Territories rewards visitors with rugged coastal walks, grazing cattle, and a glimpse of traditional fishing-village life. Ferries from Wong Shek Pier or Ma Liu Shui deliver you to a tiny pier where the only soundtrack is the breeze and the occasional lowing of water buffalo. It’s a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and let the landscape – all rolling green hills and turquoise bays – do the talking.
Highlights & What to See
- Tap Mun Country Trail – A 3.5 km loop that takes in the island’s best scenery: sea arches, weathered rock formations, and panoramic views of the Tolo Channel and outlying islands.
- Grassy Meadows & Water Buffalo – The island’s semi-wild buffalo roam freely; watch them from a respectful distance as they graze beside ancient stone walls.
- Tap Mun Tin Hau Temple – A 300-year-old temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea, with intricate carvings and a peaceful courtyard.
- Fishing Village & Seafood – The small settlement around the pier has a handful of seafood stalls serving freshly caught squid, prawns, and fish – perfect for a lunch pit stop.
- Lung Mei Viewing Point – A short climb to a pavilion offering a classic photo op of the island’s dramatic coastline.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample for Tap Mun – arrive on the morning ferry, walk the trail (allow 1.5–2 hours at a leisurely pace), linger for a seafood lunch, and catch the afternoon ferry back. If you’re combining it with a trip to nearby Sai Kung or the Geopark, start early to make the most of the day. The island has no accommodation, so plan for a day trip.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
