Sha Tin, a dynamic district in Hong Kong's New Territories, offers a fascinating blend of heritage, nature, and modern life. While often overshadowed by Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, Sha Tin rewards travellers with serene temple complexes, lush hiking trails, and a vibrant local food scene. The area is easily reached by MTR, making it a perfect day trip or a base for exploring the quieter side of Hong Kong.
Highlights & What to See
- Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery – A spectacular hillside complex featuring over 12,000 Buddha statues lining the steep path to the main hall. The serene atmosphere and panoramic views over Sha Tin are unforgettable.
- Sha Tin Racecourse & Hong Kong Heritage Museum – The racecourse is a major event venue (check for race days), while the Heritage Museum offers deep dives into Cantonese opera, Chinese art, and local history.
- Lion Rock Country Park – A classic hike with rewarding city views. The iconic Lion Rock summit is a symbol of Hong Kong resilience; the trail starts from nearby Wong Tai Sin or Sha Tin.
- Che Kung Temple – A lively Taoist temple dedicated to the god of war, especially vibrant during Chinese New Year. Spin the windmill for good luck.
- Shing Mun River Promenade – A scenic waterfront walk ideal for cycling, jogging, or simply watching dragon boat practices. Rent a bike from one of the many shops near the river.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day to experience Sha Tin properly. Start with the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery in the morning (go early to avoid crowds and heat). After lunch at a local cha chaan teng (try the Swiss Wing!), visit the Heritage Museum or Che Kung Temple. If you're up for a hike, tackle Lion Rock in the late afternoon for sunset views. Alternatively, a more relaxed afternoon could include cycling along the Shing Mun River. Sha Tin is compact enough to combine with a visit to nearby Tai Po or Sai Kung on a second day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Tai Po – A charming market town with the Tai Po Waterfront Park, a huge kite-flying area, and the famous Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees.
- Sai Kung – Known as the 'back garden of Hong Kong', this fishing town offers seafood restaurants, kayaking, and hiking trails like the MacLehose Trail.
- Kowloon City – A short MTR ride away, explore the former Walled City park and authentic Thai eateries.
- New Territories West – The wetlands and bird sanctuary at Mai Po, plus the historic walled village of Kam Tin.
