Flowing through the heart of Sha Tin, the Shing Mun River is a tranquil ribbon of water that transforms this New Territories new town into a surprisingly scenic escape. Lined with wide, tree-shaded promenades and dotted with parks and temples, the river offers a peaceful counterpoint to Hong Kong's urban intensity. Here you can cycle, stroll, or simply watch dragon boat teams practise, all while absorbing layers of local life — from traditional fishing villages to modern high-rises.
Highlights & What to See
- Shing Mun River Promenade: A 7-km paved path perfect for cycling or walking, with views of the Tolo Harbour and the Tsuen Wan hills. Rent a bike from one of the many shops near Sha Tin station.
- Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery: A short climb from the river leads to this vibrant temple complex, home to more than 12,000 Buddha statues. The 400-step approach is lined with golden arhats — a photographer's dream.
- Sha Tin Park: A manicured Chinese garden with pagodas, koi ponds and a giant aviary, right on the riverbank. A calm spot for a picnic or a rest.
- Che Kung Temple: A lively Taoist temple dedicated to the God of Protection, especially bustling during Chinese New Year. Spin the giant windmill for luck.
- Hong Kong Heritage Museum: Just off the river, this excellent museum covers Cantonese opera, Bruce Lee and local history. The airy architecture makes it a cool retreat on hot days.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the river promenade and one or two temples, but a full day allows you to cycle the entire river, visit the Heritage Museum and enjoy a leisurely lunch at a waterfront restaurant. Start early to avoid the midday heat, and consider ending with a sunset stroll along the river as the skyscrapers light up.
