Perched on a hillside in Sha Tin, the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is one of Hong Kong's most unusual and rewarding temples. Despite its name, it houses not 10,000 but over 12,800 Buddha statues of all shapes, sizes and poses, lining the walls and stairways. The climb up 431 steps is part of the experience, as you pass golden arhats lining the path. At the top, you'll find a working monastery with a main hall, a nine-storey pagoda, and panoramic views over the New Territories. The monastery is a serene escape from the city's hustle, offering a glimpse into Buddhist culture and a fantastic photo opportunity.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for the visit, including the climb, exploring the halls and taking in the views. The ascent takes around 15-20 minutes at a steady pace, but you'll want to pause to admire the statues and snap photos. Combine with a morning or afternoon in Sha Tin – perhaps a visit to the nearby Heritage Museum or a stroll along the river – to make a half-day trip from central Hong Kong.
