Perched on a hillside in Sha Tin, the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is one of Hong Kong's most unusual and rewarding temples. Despite its name, it houses not 10,000 but over 12,800 Buddha statues of all shapes, sizes and poses, lining the walls and stairways. The climb up 431 steps is part of the experience, as you pass golden arhats lining the path. At the top, you'll find a working monastery with a main hall, a nine-storey pagoda, and panoramic views over the New Territories. The monastery is a serene escape from the city's hustle, offering a glimpse into Buddhist culture and a fantastic photo opportunity.
Highlights & What to See
- The climb itself – a steep but manageable stairway lined with life-sized golden statues of the Buddha's disciples, each in a different pose.
- The Main Hall – home to a striking central Buddha statue surrounded by thousands of smaller Buddhas on the walls and ceiling.
- The Nine-Storied Pagoda – climb to the top for sweeping views of Sha Tin, the hills and the Shing Mun River.
- The Kwan Yin Hall – dedicated to the goddess of mercy, with a serene statue and intricate carvings.
- The Bone Chamber – a small hall containing the cremated remains of monks, an unusual but respectful sight.
- Wild monkeys – cheeky macaques often hang around the monastery grounds; keep your belongings secure.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for the visit, including the climb, exploring the halls and taking in the views. The ascent takes around 15-20 minutes at a steady pace, but you'll want to pause to admire the statues and snap photos. Combine with a morning or afternoon in Sha Tin – perhaps a visit to the nearby Heritage Museum or a stroll along the river – to make a half-day trip from central Hong Kong.
