Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls
Hidden in the lush hills of Hong Kong's New Territories, Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls is a series of four cascades that form one of the most rewarding and least crowded hikes in the territory. The trail winds through dense forest, past mossy boulders and trickling streams, culminating in a dramatic plunge pool at the top. This is a place where the city feels a world away — a cool, green oasis perfect for a half-day escape into nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Four Named Cascades: The trail passes Bottom Falls, Middle Falls, Upper Falls, and the magnificent Main Falls (also called the 'Smokey Blue Waterfall' for its misty spray). Each one offers a different character, from wide, gentle slides to a 35-metre vertical drop.
- Plumcot Stream: The crystal-clear stream that feeds the falls is lined with smooth, flat rocks — ideal for a picnic or a cool dip in the lower pools. The water is refreshingly clean, and the sound of rushing water accompanies you the whole way.
- Lush Forest Canopy: The trail is shaded by towering ferns, bamboo groves, and ancient trees. Keep an eye out for colourful butterflies, dragonflies, and the occasional wild boar or monkey in the quieter sections.
- Tai Mo Shan Views: From the upper reaches, you can glimpse Hong Kong's highest peak, Tai Mo Shan, often wreathed in cloud. The contrast between the rugged mountain and the verdant valley is stunning.
- Peaceful Atmosphere: Unlike many Hong Kong hikes, Ng Tung Chai remains relatively quiet, even on weekends. The serenity and the sound of water make it a meditative escape from the urban rush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow three to four hours for the full return hike from the trailhead near Ng Tung Chai village. The path is well-defined but can be steep and slippery in places, especially after rain. Most visitors take their time to swim and relax at the pools, so plan for a half-day outing. Start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and to enjoy the falls in softer light. The hike is moderate in difficulty — sturdy shoes and plenty of water are essential.
