Ma On Shan, a mountain on the border between the New Territories and the Sai Kung Peninsula, offers hikers a rugged, rewarding escape from Hong Kong's urban bustle. The name means 'Saddle Horse Mountain,' and its distinctive peak, shaped like a saddle, dominates the skyline. This area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with trails that wind through dense forest, past ancient rock formations, and up to panoramic views of Tolo Harbour and the distant islands.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day exploring Ma On Shan. Start early with the hike to the summit (allow 4–5 hours round trip), then explore the village and promenade in the afternoon. If you're short on time, a half-day can be spent on the lower trails and the promenade, but the summit is the highlight and worth the effort.
