Lung Yuek Tau, Hong Kong New Territories
Lung Yuek Tau, a rugged peninsula in the northeastern New Territories, feels a world away from Hong Kong’s skyscrapers. This remote coastal area is a hiker’s dream, with dramatic sea cliffs, pristine beaches, and a network of trails that weave through Hakka villages and dense woodland. It’s a place where you can wander for hours without seeing another soul, then stumble upon a tiny temple or a seafood stall serving just-caught fish.
Highlights & What to See
- Lung Yuek Tau Hiking Trail – A stunning 4–5 hour coastal loop that offers panoramic views of Double Haven and the distant mainland China. The trail passes through old stone bridges and overgrown steps, with wild orchids and butterflies for company.
- Wong Chuk Kok Beach – A secluded, crescent-shaped beach accessible only on foot. The water is crystal-clear and calm, perfect for a cooling dip after the hike.
- Hakka Villages – Explore the abandoned or semi-abandoned villages of Lai Chi Wo and So Lo Pun. Their crumbling grey-brick houses and ancestral halls offer a poignant glimpse into rural life before the exodus to the city.
- Double Haven – This sheltered bay is dotted with tiny islands and floating fish farms. Kayak among the karst outcrops or join a local boat tour for a water-level perspective.
- Sam A Tsuen – A small, active fishing village at the trailhead where you can buy fresh seafood or sip tea at a waterfront shack.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lung Yuek Tau rewards those who take it slow. Plan a full day – arrive early from Sai Kung or Ma Liu Shui by minibus and boat, then hike the loop with plenty of stops for photos and swims. If you’re keen to explore the villages in depth, consider an overnight stay at one of the rustic guesthouses in Lai Chi Wo. Most visitors find 6–8 hours sufficient for the main trail and a beach break, but the area is so tranquil you might want to linger longer.
