Clear Water Bay Country Park
Clear Water Bay Country Park, on the eastern coast of Hong Kong's New Territories, is a rugged peninsula of grassy hills, rocky headlands, and pristine beaches. It's a refreshing escape from the city, offering some of Hong Kong's best coastal walks, dramatic sea views, and quiet coves perfect for a dip. The park's name comes from the crystal-clear waters that lap its shores, and it remains relatively uncrowded compared to other parts of the territory.
Highlights & What to See
- High Junk Peak Country Trail – a challenging but rewarding hike along the peninsula's spine, with panoramic views of the South China Sea and the distant Sai Kung islands.
- Clear Water Bay First and Second Beaches – two adjacent sandy beaches with calm, clean waters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing; facilities include showers and changing rooms.
- Tai Au Mun (Junk Bay) – a picturesque fishing village with seafood restaurants on the water; try the steamed fish and salt-and-pepper squid.
- Lung Ha Wan (Dragon's Tail) Coastal Walk – a gentler trail following the coastline, passing sea caves, rock formations, and the 'Fairy Rock' viewpoint.
- Sheung Sze Wan (Sharp Island) – accessible via a short walk at low tide, this tiny island has a tombolo, volcanic rock formations, and a small beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day to a full day here. A morning hike on the High Junk Peak Trail (about 2–3 hours) followed by a lazy afternoon at Clear Water Bay First Beach is a classic itinerary. If you want to explore the coastal walks and visit the fishing village, plan for a full day. The park is well-suited for a self-drive trip from central Hong Kong (about 45 minutes by car), but note that parking is limited on weekends.
