Cheung Chau Island
Cheung Chau is a dumbbell-shaped island off the coast of Hong Kong's New Territories, a world away from the city's skyscrapers. This former fishing village is now a laid-back escape where narrow lanes are lined with seafood restaurants, temples, and traditional shops. The island's car-free streets, fringed by a working harbour and sandy beaches, invite you to slow down and explore on foot or by bike.
Highlights & What to See
- Pak Tai Temple – A historic Taoist temple dedicated to the sea god, built in 1783, with intricate roof carvings and a courtyard where the famous Bun Snatching Festival takes place.
- Tung Wan Beach – The main sandy beach, perfect for a swim or a lazy afternoon, with calm waters and nearby cafés.
- Cheung Chau Wind Tunnel – A scenic coastal trail leading to a dramatic rock formation and a blowhole that sprays water during high tide.
- Mini Great Wall – A family-friendly hiking path with panoramic views of the island and outlying islets, dotted with quirky rock formations.
- Fishing Harbour & Seafood Street – Watch the daily catch come in, then dine at open-air seafood stalls where you choose your fish from tanks. Try the steamed garoupa or salt-baked shrimp.
Suggested Time to Spend
A day trip is ideal – arrive by ferry from Central (about 1 hour) and spend 4–6 hours wandering the village, hiking a short trail, and enjoying a seafood lunch. To fully unwind, stay overnight at a guesthouse and catch the sunrise from the Mini Great Wall. The island is compact, so you can easily combine it with a visit to Lantau Island or Hong Kong Island.
