Castle Peak

Rising dramatically from the western coast of the New Territories, Castle Peak (Tsing Shan) is a rugged hiking destination with sweeping views over the Pearl River Delta and the Tuen Mun coastline. Its name comes from a British fortification on the summit, but the area is equally rich in Taoist and Buddhist heritage, with centuries-old temples hidden in the hillsides. For travellers seeking an escape from Hong Kong's urban frenzy, Castle Peak offers a raw, uncrowded slice of nature with a side of local culture.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors dedicate a half-day to Castle Peak, starting early morning to avoid the heat. The main hike from the monastery car park to the summit takes about 2–3 hours round trip, including time to explore the fortifications. Add another hour to visit Hung Shing Temple and the promenade. If you plan to linger at the monastery or enjoy a picnic at the top, allocate a full day. The hike is moderate but steep in sections, so wear sturdy shoes and carry plenty of water.
