Tian Tan Buddha & Lantau Island
Rising dramatically above the wooded slopes of Lantau Island, the Tian Tan Buddha — also known as the Big Buddha — is one of Hong Kong's most iconic landmarks. This colossal 34-metre bronze statue sits serenely atop a hill near the Po Lin Monastery, gazing out over the South China Sea. The journey to reach it is part of the experience: a scenic cable-car ride on the Ngong Ping 360 offers breathtaking views of the island's lush mountains and coastline. Lantau itself is a world away from Hong Kong's urban bustle, with hiking trails, sleepy fishing villages and a laid-back island vibe that rewards those who linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Tian Tan Buddha — Climb the 268 steps to stand at the feet of the world's tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha; the panoramic views from the top are sublime.
- Po Lin Monastery — Just below the Buddha, this active Buddhist monastery (founded in 1906) features ornate halls, tranquil gardens and vegetarian lunches in its dining hall.
- Ngong Ping 360 cable car — A 25-minute ride from Tung Chung with glass-bottom cabins available; on clear days you can see the airport, the sea and the Buddha itself.
- Wisdom Path — A short, meditative walk featuring 38 wooden stelae inscribed with the Heart Sutra, set against a hillside with sweeping views.
- Tai O fishing village — Lantau's stilt-house community where you can sample fresh seafood, spot pink dolphins on a boat tour, and wander narrow lanes lined with dried fish and shrimp paste.
- Lantau Trail & Sunset Peak — For hikers, sections of the 70 km Lantau Trail offer challenging ascents and rewarding vistas; Sunset Peak (869 m) is a favourite for sunrise/sunset treks.
Suggested Time to Spend
A full day is ideal to experience the Buddha, monastery and Ngong Ping village without rushing. Arrive early (around 9–10 am) to beat the crowds and enjoy the site before the midday heat. After lunch, take the cable car back down and head to Tai O for a late afternoon wander. If you're a keen hiker, add an extra day to tackle a section of the Lantau Trail or explore the island's south coast beaches.
