Lantau Island, the largest of Hong Kong’s outlying islands, offers a dramatic escape from the city’s skyscrapers. At its heart lies Ngong Ping, a plateau that feels worlds away from the urban buzz, crowned by the majestic Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) and the serene Po Lin Monastery. This is a place where Chinese Buddhist culture meets stunning coastal hiking and family-friendly attractions, all easily reached by a scenic cable car ride from Tung Chung.
Highlights & What to See
- Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha): Climb 268 steps to the world’s tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha, offering panoramic views of the South China Sea and surrounding peaks.
- Po Lin Monastery: Explore the ornate halls and peaceful gardens of this important Buddhist monastery, founded in 1906. Don’t miss the vegetarian lunch served in the monastery’s dining hall.
- Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car: A 25-minute ride over the turquoise waters of Tung Chung Bay and the lush mountains of Lantau, with glass-bottom cabins available for a thrill.
- Wisdom Path: A short walk from Ngong Ping Village, this installation of 38 wooden stelae inscribed with the Heart Sutra in calligraphy by scholar Jao Tsung-I offers a contemplative stroll.
- Lantau Trail & Hiking: For active travellers, sections of the Lantau Trail lead from Ngong Ping to the remote beach of Tai O or the summit of Lantau Peak (934 m), the second-highest peak in Hong Kong.
- Tai O Fishing Village: A 15-minute bus ride from Ngong Ping, this stilt-house village is a glimpse into Hong Kong’s past, with seafood markets and boat trips to see pink dolphins.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day at Ngong Ping, arriving by the first cable car around 10am to beat the crowds. Allocate 2–3 hours for the Buddha, monastery, and Wisdom Path, plus another hour for lunch and the Ngong Ping Village shops. To add Tai O, budget an extra 2–3 hours. If you’re a keen hiker, a full day allows you to combine the Big Buddha with a section of the Lantau Trail, such as the climb to Lantau Peak (allow 3–4 hours round trip). For a relaxed experience, start early and finish with a sunset cable car ride back.
