Discovery Bay is a tranquil, car-free residential enclave on the northeastern coast of Lantau Island, offering a surprising blend of seaside relaxation and access to Hong Kong's wilder side. With its Mediterranean-style waterfront promenade, private beaches, and a laid-back expat vibe, it feels a world away from the city's hustle. Yet it's just a 25-minute ferry from Central, making it an ideal base for exploring Lantau's hiking trails, monasteries, and cultural landmarks.
Highlights & What to See
- Discovery Bay Plaza & Waterfront – Stroll along the palm-fringed promenade lined with alfresco cafes, international restaurants, and boutiques. The plaza comes alive with weekend markets and live music.
- Tai Pak Beach – A small, clean beach perfect for a dip or sunbathing, with lifeguards on duty during summer. Nearby you'll find showers and changing facilities.
- Discovery Bay Golf Club – An 18-hole golf course set against mountain and sea views. Non-members can play on weekdays with advance booking.
- Lantau Trail (Section 12) – From Discovery Bay, you can access a scenic coastal hike to Mui Wo, passing through bamboo groves and offering panoramic views of the South China Sea.
- Trappist Haven Monastery – A serene, working monastery on the southern edge of Discovery Bay, known for its peaceful gardens and handmade fruitcake sold at the gate.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day to a full day in Discovery Bay, combining a leisurely beach visit, a meal on the waterfront, and a short hike. If you plan to play golf or hike the longer Lantau Trail sections, allocate a full day. Many travellers use it as a gateway to explore the rest of Lantau, spending a night in one of the resort-style hotels to fully unwind.
