Kowloon Walled City was once the most densely populated place on Earth, a lawless enclave of high-rise tenements, narrow alleys, and shadowy enterprises. Demolished in the 1990s, the site is now a serene park that preserves fragments of its chaotic past. The Walled City’s story is one of resilience, decay, and renewal—a must-visit for anyone fascinated by Hong Kong’s complex history.
Highlights & What to See
- Kowloon Walled City Park – A beautifully landscaped Chinese garden built on the former site, featuring ponds, pavilions, and the original yamen (administrative building).
- Yamen Building – The only surviving Qing-era structure, now a small museum with exhibits on the walled city’s history.
- Remnants of the City Wall – Sections of the original granite wall and gate foundations are preserved within the park.
- South Gate – Excavated remains of the old south gate, with interpretive plaques explaining the city’s layout.
- Model of the Walled City – A detailed scale model at the park’s visitor centre shows the incredible density of the former slum.
