Rising 552 metres above Victoria Harbour, The Peak is Hong Kong's most iconic viewpoint, offering a jaw-dropping panorama of skyscrapers, harbour, and islands. But beyond the famous tram ride and photo op, the area is a lush escape of walking trails, colonial history, and upscale dining. Hong Kong Island itself buzzes with a mix of gleaming finance towers, traditional temples, and vibrant neighbourhoods like Central and Sheung Wan. This is where East meets West in a dizzying vertical cityscape.
Highlights & What to See
- The Peak Tram – a funicular ride with steep gradients and stunning city views as you ascend. Arrive early or late to avoid queues.
- Sky Terrace 428 – the highest viewing platform in Hong Kong, with 360-degree views over the harbour and outlying islands. Go at sunset for the best light.
- Peak Circle Walk – a gentle 3.5 km paved trail around the summit, passing through shady woodland with constant harbour glimpses. Perfect for a morning stroll.
- Victoria Peak Garden – a quieter spot with manicured lawns and colonial-era architecture, offering a different perspective of the skyline.
- Hong Kong Park – located at the base of the Peak, this green oasis features an aviary, a conservatory, and the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware.
- Man Mo Temple – a historic temple on Hollywood Road dedicated to the gods of literature and war, with enormous hanging incense coils.
- Sheung Wan & Central Escalators – explore the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system, lined with hip bars, antique shops, and street art.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to The Peak and its surroundings. Start late morning with a walk through Central's historic streets, take the tram up around 2pm, stroll the Circle Walk, and watch sunset from Sky Terrace. Descend for dinner in SoHo or Lan Kwai Fong. If you want to hike, allow a full day to combine the Peak with the Dragon's Back trail on the south side of the island.
