Sai Wan, a secluded bay on the southeastern coast of Lantau Island, offers a rare blend of untouched nature and rustic village charm. Accessible only by foot or boat, this hidden gem rewards adventurous travellers with pristine beaches, dramatic coastal trails, and a genuine sense of escape from Hong Kong's urban buzz. The journey itself, whether hiking the scenic MacLehose Trail or taking a kaito from Sai Kung, sets the tone for a day of exploration and tranquility.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate a full day (6–8 hours) to truly appreciate Sai Wan. Start early from Sai Kung, take the morning kaito to the trailhead, and hike the 2–3 hour route to the beach. Spend a few hours swimming, exploring the stream, and enjoying a picnic. If you're up for it, continue along the MacLehose Trail to Tai Long Wan for an even longer adventure. The last kaito back usually departs in the late afternoon, so plan accordingly.
