Riding the Peak Tram is one of Hong Kong's most iconic experiences. Since 1888, this funicular railway has hauled passengers up the steep slope of Victoria Peak, offering jaw-dropping views of the city's skyline, Victoria Harbour, and the surrounding islands. The tram itself is a marvel of engineering—ascending at a gradient as steep as 27 degrees—and the journey is a thrilling few minutes that ends at the Peak Tower, a hub of dining, shopping, and observation decks. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveller, the Peak Tram delivers a quintessential Hong Kong moment.
Highlights & What to See
- Peak Tram Ride: The ascent itself is the main event. Sit on the right-hand side for the best harbour views as the city sprawls below you.
- Sky Terrace 428: The highest viewing platform in Hong Kong, offering 360-degree panoramas from 428 metres above sea level. Go at sunset for a spectacular transformation from day to night.
- Victoria Peak Garden: A peaceful green space at the summit, away from the crowds, with walking trails and more sweeping views—perfect for a picnic or a quiet moment.
- Peak Circle Walk: A 3.5-km loop trail that circles the peak, passing through lush vegetation and offering constantly changing vistas of the city, harbour, and outlying islands.
- Peak Tower & Peak Galleria: Two shopping and dining complexes at the top. Grab a window seat at a café or try local dim sum with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least half a day to fully enjoy the Peak Tram experience. The tram ride itself takes about 5–7 minutes each way, but queues can be long, especially at peak hours. Plan for 2–3 hours if you just want to ride up, snap photos at Sky Terrace, and ride down. For a more relaxed visit that includes the Peak Circle Walk and a meal, set aside 4–5 hours. Morning visits are quieter, while late afternoon combines daylight and city lights.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Hong Kong Park: A short walk from the tram terminus, this park features aviaries, a greenhouse, and the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware—a peaceful green oasis.
- SoHo & Lan Kwai Fong: Just down the hill from the tram, these areas are packed with bars, restaurants, and nightlife. Perfect for an evening after the Peak.
- Victoria Harbour & Tsim Sha Tsui: Take the Star Ferry across the harbour for iconic skyline views from the Kowloon side, or stroll the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade.
- Ocean Park: A 15-minute drive or bus ride away, this marine-themed park offers rides, animal exhibits, and cable car rides over the coast.
