Hong Kong Island West Central

Hong Kong Island’s West Central district is where the city’s colonial past meets its pulsating present. A labyrinth of steep streets and historic lanes, this area packs more character per square metre than almost anywhere else in the territory. Here, century-old temples sit beneath glass-and-steel towers, and the aroma of Chinese herbs mingles with the scent of freshly brewed coffee from hipster cafés. It’s a neighbourhood that rewards wandering – every alley reveals a dai pai dong (open-air food stall), a hidden art gallery, or a glimpse of the harbour.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give West Central at least half a day – ideally a full day if you want to linger over meals and explore the side streets. Start late morning at Man Mo Temple, then wander down Hollywood Road past antique shops. Lunch at a dai pai dong in Sheung Wan, then ride the escalator up to the Mid-Levels for a coffee break. Spend the afternoon at PMQ or Tai Kwun, and finish with sunset drinks at a rooftop bar overlooking Victoria Harbour. The area is compact and walkable, but wear comfortable shoes for the hills.
