Hong Kong Island The Peak
Rising 552 metres above Victoria Harbour, The Peak is Hong Kong Island's most iconic lookout, offering a vertiginous panorama of skyscrapers, harbour and islands. The historic Peak Tram funicular has been hauling passengers up the steep slope since 1888, and the summit is now a buzzing hub of restaurants, shops and walking trails. Whether you come for the glittering city lights at dusk or a misty morning hike, The Peak delivers one of Asia's most unforgettable urban views.
Highlights & What to See
- Peak Tram: The funicular ride itself is an attraction — sit on the right for the best harbour views as you climb at a 45-degree angle through lush vegetation.
- Sky Terrace 428: The highest viewing platform in Hong Kong, with 360-degree vistas over the harbour, Kowloon and the South China Sea. Arrive an hour before sunset to watch the city light up.
- The Peak Circle Walk: A gentle 3.5 km paved trail that loops around the summit, passing Lugard Road and Harlech Road with constant, stunning views. It's flat, family-friendly and takes about an hour.
- Peak Tower: The wok-shaped landmark houses shopping, dining and the Madame Tussauds wax museum. Skip the chain restaurants and head to the café terraces for a coffee with a view.
- Hong Kong Trail Section 1: For more adventurous walkers, this leafy trail descends from The Peak through Pok Fu Lam Country Park to the south side of the island, offering a different perspective away from the crowds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours at The Peak, combining the tram ride, a loop of the Circle Walk and a drink at the top. For sunset and night views, plan to arrive around 4 pm, enjoy the daylight panorama, then stay for the neon-lit skyline. If you're hiking the full Hong Kong Trail section, allow an extra 1.5 hours. Avoid weekends and public holidays when queues for the tram can exceed an hour; consider taking bus 15 from Central instead.
