Hong Kong Island's southern coast is a world away from the neon-lit skyscrapers of Central. Here, Ocean Park combines a marine-themed amusement park with conservation education, while the surrounding neighbourhoods of Wong Chuk Hang and Aberdeen offer a glimpse into local life. The area's lush hills and sheltered bays also provide excellent hiking and seafood dining.
Highlights & What to See
- Ocean Park – A sprawling theme park with thrilling rides (the Hair Raiser roller coaster), incredible animal exhibits (giant pandas, dolphins, and the Grand Aquarium), and cable cars with panoramic views of the South China Sea.
- Aberdeen Fishing Village – Take a sampan ride past floating seafood restaurants and junks; for an authentic meal, head to the Jumbo Kingdom floating restaurant (currently closed for renovation, but the harbour atmosphere remains).
- Stanley – A charming seaside town with Stanley Market (great for souvenirs), the historic Murray House, and a waterfront promenade perfect for a sunset stroll.
- Dragon's Back Trail – Hong Kong's most famous hike, starting from Shek O Road, offering stunning coastal views; the 8.5 km trail ends at Big Wave Bay, where you can reward yourself with a swim.
- Repulse Bay – One of Hong Kong's best beaches, with soft sand, calm waters, and the Tin Hau Temple nearby.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least a full day for Ocean Park itself, ideally arriving at opening time (10am) to beat the crowds. If you want to combine the park with the surrounding area, plan for two days: one for Ocean Park and another for hiking the Dragon's Back in the morning, followed by an afternoon at Repulse Bay or Stanley. For a relaxed visit, a long weekend works well, letting you soak up the coastal vibe without rushing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Lamma Island – A car-free escape with hiking trails, seafood restaurants, and a laid-back atmosphere, accessible by ferry from Central.
- Cheung Chau – A traditional fishing island with a famous bun-snatching festival; ferries depart from Central.
- Hong Kong Disneyland – On Lantau Island, about 45 minutes away by MTR, perfect for a family day trip.
