Tai Koo Shing, a sprawling private housing estate on the eastern edge of Hong Kong Island, might not be the first place that springs to mind for a visitor, but it offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's everyday life and a surprising dose of nature. This planned community, built on reclaimed land, is a self-contained world of malls, parks, and residential towers. Yet just beyond its manicured gardens, you'll find some of Hong Kong's best hiking trails and coastal walks, making it a compelling base for exploring the island's less-visited eastern reaches.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Tai Koo Shing itself can be explored in a couple of hours, but the area's real draw is its proximity to outstanding hiking. To do the Dragon's Back hike and enjoy Shek O, set aside a full day. If you're keen on the Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail, combine it with a half-day visit. For a relaxed pace, consider spending two nights in the area, using it as a base for hiking and exploring the eastern side of Hong Kong Island before moving on.
