Tai Koo Shing, a sprawling private housing estate on the eastern edge of Hong Kong Island, might not be the first place that springs to mind for a visitor, but it offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's everyday life and a surprising dose of nature. This planned community, built on reclaimed land, is a self-contained world of malls, parks, and residential towers. Yet just beyond its manicured gardens, you'll find some of Hong Kong's best hiking trails and coastal walks, making it a compelling base for exploring the island's less-visited eastern reaches.
Highlights & What to See
- Tai Tam Country Park: Lace up your hiking boots and tackle the Wilson Trail or the Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail, which winds past historic reservoirs, bridges, and stone tunnels built in the late 19th century. The views over the reservoir and down to the South China Sea are superb.
- Dragon's Back: One of Hong Kong's most famous hikes, the Dragon's Back ridge offers panoramic views of Shek O, Big Wave Bay, and the distant islands. The trail is easily accessible from Tai Koo Shing via a short bus ride to the trailhead.
- Tai Koo Shing's Quarry Bay Park: This waterfront park is a local favourite for jogging, cycling, and picnicking. It stretches along the harbour, with views of the bustling Victoria Harbour and the Kowloon skyline. The promenade is particularly lovely at sunset.
- Cityplaza & Kornhill Plaza: These massive shopping malls are the commercial heart of Tai Koo Shing. Cityplaza boasts a huge ice-skating rink, a cinema, and countless dining options, from dim sum to ramen. It's a great place to experience the local mall culture.
- Shek O Village & Beach: A short bus ride from Tai Koo Shing, Shek O is a laid-back seaside village with a beautiful beach, seafood restaurants, and a chilled-out vibe. It's a world away from the city's skyscrapers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tai Koo Shing itself can be explored in a couple of hours, but the area's real draw is its proximity to outstanding hiking. To do the Dragon's Back hike and enjoy Shek O, set aside a full day. If you're keen on the Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail, combine it with a half-day visit. For a relaxed pace, consider spending two nights in the area, using it as a base for hiking and exploring the eastern side of Hong Kong Island before moving on.
