Escape the skyscraper canyons of central Hong Kong and discover Sai Wan, a rugged coastal enclave on the eastern edge of Hong Kong Island. This is where the city meets the wild: dramatic sea cliffs, secret beaches, and hiking trails that reward with panoramic views of the South China Sea. Sai Wan feels a world away from the urban rush, yet it's just a short bus ride from Shau Kei Wan. It's the perfect day trip for travellers craving nature, solitude, and a taste of Hong Kong's untamed side.
Highlights & What to See
- Shek O Country Trail – This scenic coastal hike hugs the cliffs between Big Wave Bay and Shek O, offering stunning ocean vistas, sea caves, and the chance to spot migrating birds. The trail is well-marked and suitable for moderate fitness levels.
- Dragon's Back – One of Hong Kong's most famous hikes, this undulating ridge offers sweeping views over Shek O Peninsula, Tai Long Wan, and the distant islands. The 8.5 km trail is exhilarating and ends at Big Wave Bay, where you can reward yourself with a swim.
- Big Wave Bay – A popular surf beach with a laid-back vibe. Even if you don't surf, the black-sand shore and surrounding greenery make it a lovely spot to relax. There are a few casual cafes for a post-hike bite.
- Shek O Village – A charming fishing village turned weekend retreat, with narrow lanes, traditional houses, and a handful of seafood restaurants. The main beach here is less crowded than Repulse Bay and offers a peaceful escape.
- Cape d'Aguilar Marine Reserve – A protected area at the southeastern tip of the island, home to the Cape d'Aguilar Lighthouse and a fascinating rock formation called the Crab Cave. It's a great spot for snorkelling and tide-pooling.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day to explore Sai Wan properly. Start early with the Dragon's Back hike (3–4 hours), then descend to Big Wave Bay for lunch and a swim. In the afternoon, take a bus to Shek O to wander the village and relax on the beach. If you're up for more, hike the Shek O Country Trail for sunset views. Alternatively, for a shorter visit, combine the Shek O Country Trail with a couple of hours at Shek O Beach – half a day is enough for a taste of the area.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Shau Kei Wan – The gateway to Sai Wan, this historic fishing port has a lively seafood market and the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence. It's worth a quick stop on your way in or out.
- Stanley – A popular seaside town on the south side of the island, known for its market, promenade, and historic Murray House. It's easily combined with a visit to Sai Wan via bus or taxi.
- Repulse Bay – One of Hong Kong's most famous beaches, with a wide sandy shore and a temple dedicated to Tin Hau. It's a short drive from Stanley and offers a more developed beach experience.
- Tai Tam Country Park – This lush park in the centre of the island features hiking trails, reservoirs, and the Tai Tam Tuk Eco-Lodge. It's a great addition for nature lovers seeking more walking routes.
