Big Wave Bay (Sai Wan) is a rugged surfers' haven on the eastern edge of Hong Kong Island, where the South China Sea rolls in with consistent swells and the surrounding hills offer a surprising dose of wilderness. This laid-back beach community feels a world away from the city's skyscrapers, yet it's just a 45-minute bus ride from Causeway Bay. The bay's name says it all: waves here can reach 2–3 metres, making it Hong Kong's premier surf spot. But even if you don't ride the waves, the coastal hike, the alfresco seafood restaurants, and the village's bohemian vibe make it a rewarding day trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing & Bodyboarding: The consistent right-hand reef break attracts local and expat surfers. Board rental and lessons are available right on the sand.
- Dragon's Back Hike: This 8.5 km ridge trail starts at To Tei Wan and ends at Big Wave Bay, offering panoramic views of the coastline and Shek O. It's one of Hong Kong's most popular day hikes.
- Shek O Country Park: Explore the lush greenery, rock pools, and coastal paths that surround the bay. The park is home to wild boar and rare bird species.
- Big Wave Bay Beach: A clean, lifeguard-patrolled beach with a relaxed vibe. The black sand and dramatic headlands make it a scenic spot for sunbathing.
- Rock Carvings: Near the beach's southern end, look for 3,000-year-old Neolithic petroglyphs etched into a granite boulder – a declared monument.
- Seafood Dining: The village's open-air restaurants serve fresh-caught fish, prawns, and squid. Try the garlic steamed clams or salt-and-pepper squid.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors combine Big Wave Bay with the Dragon's Back hike, which takes about 2–3 hours. If you're just here for the beach and a meal, allow a half-day (4 hours). For surfers, a full day is ideal – the best waves roll in from November to March. To fully appreciate the area, start early, hike in the morning, cool off at the beach, and enjoy a late seafood lunch before catching the bus back.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Tai Long Wan (Shek O): A quieter, more secluded beach just south of Big Wave Bay, accessible via a short coastal path. Great for a peaceful swim.
- Cape D'Aguilar Marine Reserve: A protected area with dramatic sea caves, a WWII fort, and the Cape D'Aguilar Lighthouse. It's a 30-minute hike from Shek O.
- Stanley: A historic market town on the southern coast, famous for Stanley Market, Murray House, and a lively waterfront promenade. About 30 minutes by bus.
- Repulse Bay: A popular family beach with a crescent of golden sand, nearby temples, and upscale restaurants. Combine it with a stop at Stanley.
