Big Wave Bay (Sai Wan) is a rugged surfers' haven on the eastern edge of Hong Kong Island, where the South China Sea rolls in with consistent swells and the surrounding hills offer a surprising dose of wilderness. This laid-back beach community feels a world away from the city's skyscrapers, yet it's just a 45-minute bus ride from Causeway Bay. The bay's name says it all: waves here can reach 2–3 metres, making it Hong Kong's premier surf spot. But even if you don't ride the waves, the coastal hike, the alfresco seafood restaurants, and the village's bohemian vibe make it a rewarding day trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors combine Big Wave Bay with the Dragon's Back hike, which takes about 2–3 hours. If you're just here for the beach and a meal, allow a half-day (4 hours). For surfers, a full day is ideal – the best waves roll in from November to March. To fully appreciate the area, start early, hike in the morning, cool off at the beach, and enjoy a late seafood lunch before catching the bus back.
