Dragon's Back, Hong Kong Island East
Dragon's Back is a spectacular ridge hike on the eastern side of Hong Kong Island, offering some of the most accessible and rewarding coastal scenery in the region. This 8.5 km trail snakes along a rugged spine of hills, with sweeping views over Shek O Beach, the South China Sea, and the distant islands. It's a favourite among locals and visitors alike for its dramatic landscapes, cool sea breezes, and the chance to escape the city's hustle without travelling far.
Highlights & What to See
- Shek O Peak – The trail's high point (284 m) delivers panoramic vistas of the coastline, Big Wave Bay, and the jagged islands of Tung Lung Chau and Po Toi.
- Big Wave Bay – A popular surf beach at the trail's end, where you can cool off with a swim or grab a bite at the beachside cafés.
- Shek O Beach – A quieter, golden-sand beach perfect for a post-hike relax, with a charming village offering seafood restaurants and a laid-back vibe.
- Dragon's Back Ridge – The main trail itself, a narrow, undulating path that feels like walking on the back of a dragon, with steep drops on either side.
- Wildlife & Flora – Keep an eye out for butterflies, birds, and the occasional wild boar; the trail passes through secondary forest and grassland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers complete the Dragon's Back trail in 2 to 3 hours, including stops for photos and a short rest at Shek O Peak. Plan for a half-day outing if you want to add a swim or lunch at Big Wave Bay or Shek O. Start early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. The trail is well-marked and suitable for most fitness levels, though sturdy shoes are recommended.
