Once a gritty industrial backwater, Chai Wan on the eastern edge of Hong Kong Island has reinvented itself as a low-key hub for contemporary art, seaside walks, and local eats. Tucked between steep slopes and the sea, this neighbourhood rewards those who venture beyond the tourist trail with a genuine slice of Hong Kong life, a scrappy creative energy, and some of the island’s best harbour views.
Highlights & What to See
- Chai Wan Art District – A cluster of former factory buildings now filled with galleries, artist studios, and indie cafés. Don’t miss Para Site, one of Hong Kong’s oldest independent art spaces, and the rotating exhibitions at Spring Workshop.
- Cape Collinson Road Coastal Walk – A breezy promenade that hugs the coastline, offering panoramic views across Tathong Channel to the outlying islands. Perfect for a sunrise or sunset stroll.
- Shek O Country Park – A short bus ride away, this wild park features dramatic cliffs, rocky coves, and the scenic Dragon’s Back hike – one of Hong Kong’s most rewarding trails.
- Chai Wan Market & Cooked Food Centre – Dive into local flavours at this bustling market. Try the curry fish balls, cheung fun (rice noodle rolls), and a bowl of wonton noodle soup from the hawker stalls.
- Museum of Coastal Defence – Housed in a historic fort, this museum traces Hong Kong’s maritime and military history. The underground tunnels and panoramic sea views are a highlight.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore Chai Wan’s art district and grab a meal, but a full day allows you to combine the coastal walk, a visit to Shek O Country Park, and the museum. Start mid-morning with the galleries, have lunch at the market, then spend the afternoon outdoors – the light is best for photos in the late afternoon. If you only have a few hours, focus on the art district and the promenade.
