Hong Kong Island Central & The Peak
Hong Kong Island’s Central district is the city’s pulsing financial heart, but it also harbours colonial-era architecture, world-class dining, and the legendary Peak Tram. Rising sharply behind the skyscrapers, Victoria Peak offers the city’s most iconic panorama – a sweeping vista of the harbour, Kowloon, and beyond. This compact area packs a punch, blending urban energy with green escapes and sky-high views.
Highlights & What to See
- Victoria Peak (The Peak): Take the historic Peak Tram up to the Sky Terrace 428 for jaw-dropping 360-degree views. The Peak Circle Walk is a gentle, shaded loop that reveals different angles of the city and harbour.
- Peak Tram History: The funicular has been hauling passengers up the steep slope since 1888 – the ride itself is a thrilling, tilting experience.
- Hong Kong Park: A lush oasis near Central, with a huge aviary, koi ponds, and the quirky Edward Youde Aviary. It’s a calm break from the urban bustle.
- Man Mo Temple: One of Hong Kong’s oldest temples, dedicated to the gods of literature and war. The interior is heavy with incense coils and carved wooden altars.
- SoHo & Hollywood Road: A maze of galleries, antique shops, and trendy bars. Hollywood Road is famous for Chinese antiques; the escalators of SoHo lead to a buzzing dining scene.
- Central–Mid-Levels Escalator: The world’s longest covered outdoor escalator system – hop on for a free ride through the neighbourhood, then wander off for a coffee or a bite.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day to explore Central and The Peak. Start in the morning with a walk through Hong Kong Park, then ride the Peak Tram up – the views are best before the midday haze. Spend a couple of hours on the Peak Circle Walk and lunch at one of the restaurants with a view. Descend in the afternoon to explore Man Mo Temple, Hollywood Road’s galleries, and SoHo’s laneways. If you’re short on time, a half-day can cover the Peak and a quick loop through Central’s highlights, but you’ll miss the neighbourhood’s laid-back charm.
