Tai Tam Country Park
Tai Tam Country Park, on the eastern side of Hong Kong Island, offers a surprising escape from the city’s relentless energy. This lush green expanse is crisscrossed by well-marked trails that wind past historic reservoirs, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic coastal views. It’s a favourite for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving a dose of nature without venturing far from Central.
Highlights & What to See
- Tai Tam Reservoir Group – A series of four historic reservoirs (built between 1888 and 1917) connected by scenic paths; the red-brick dam and arched bridges are particularly photogenic.
- Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir & the Eco Trail – A gentle walk along the water’s edge, with interpretive signs about local flora and fauna; keep an eye out for macaques and kingfishers.
- Mount Parker Road Green Trail – A challenging but rewarding hike that climbs from the park to the summit of Mount Parker (532m), offering sweeping views over the South China Sea and Kowloon.
- Shek O Country Park – Adjacent to Tai Tam, this coastal park features dramatic sea cliffs, the iconic Dragon’s Back ridge, and the laid-back beach village of Shek O.
- Tai Tam Bay – A quiet beach at the park’s southern edge, perfect for a cooling dip after a hike; the nearby Tai Tam Tuk Village has a few casual seafood eateries.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough for a relaxed walk around the main reservoirs and a short hike – aim for 3–4 hours. If you plan to tackle the Dragon’s Back or Mount Parker, set aside a full day (6–8 hours) and start early to avoid the midday heat. The park is best visited from October to March when temperatures are cooler.

- Ocean Park – A major marine-themed amusement park on the south side of the island, easily combined with a morning hike in Tai Tam.
