Once a symbol of colonial law and order, Tai Kwun has been reborn as Hong Kong's most captivating heritage and arts complex. Set on Hong Kong Island, this former police station, prison and courthouse compound now weaves together 19th-century architecture, contemporary galleries, cool cafes and a lively public square. It offers a rare glimpse into the city's layered past while buzzing with creative energy.

- Heritage buildings – Explore the restored Central Police Station, Magistrate's Court and Victoria Prison, where you can walk through original prison cells and see the tiny exercise yards. The architecture is a beautifully preserved mix of Neoclassical and Victorian styles.

Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside at least two to three hours to properly explore Tai Kwun. Start with a guided heritage tour (about 45 minutes) to get the backstory, then wander the prison block and galleries at your own pace. If you plan to eat or have a drink here, add another hour or two. The complex is best visited in the late afternoon, when the light is golden and the courtyards begin to fill with a relaxed evening crowd.

- Central Mid-Levels Escalator – The world's longest outdoor covered escalator system is just a few minutes' walk away. Ride it up to the hip neighbourhood of Soho for more bars and restaurants, or descend through the old streets of Central.
- PMQ – A short stroll west, this former police married quarters is now a creative hub with design shops, studios and cafes. Great for contemporary design and a quieter vibe.
- Man Mo Temple – Head uphill to this atmospheric 19th-century temple dedicated to the gods of literature and war. The huge hanging incense coils are a photographer's dream.
- Hollywood Road & Cat Street Market – Wander along Hollywood Road for antique shops, art galleries and the lively Cat Street Market, where you can hunt for vintage treasures and curios.
- Sheung Wan – A short walk west, this district is a fascinating mix of traditional dried-seafood shops, hip cafes, and street art. Explore the winding lanes around Wing Lok Street and Tai Ping Shan Street.
