Mid-Levels, Hong Kong Island
Mid-Levels, wedged between Central and Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island, is a lush, upscale residential district that offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's colonial history and contemporary expat life. Its network of steep streets and the world's longest covered outdoor escalator system make it a uniquely walkable and atmospheric area, with hidden temples, art galleries, and some of the best dining views in the city.
Highlights & What to See
- Mid-Levels Escalator – Ride the 800-meter-long outdoor escalator system, the longest of its kind in the world, passing through Soho and past old tenement buildings, bars, and boutiques. It's free and runs downhill until 10am, then uphill until midnight.
- Man Mo Temple – A historic Taoist temple on Hollywood Road, filled with giant incense coils and intricate carvings, offering a serene contrast to the urban bustle.
- Cat Street Market – Just off Hollywood Road, this narrow lane is packed with antique shops, curios, and vintage collectibles, perfect for treasure-hunting.
- Peak Tram and Victoria Peak – From the lower terminus on Garden Road, take the iconic funicular to the top for panoramic views over the harbour and Kowloon. The Peak Circle Walk is an easy, scenic loop.
- Government House & Zoological Gardens – Explore the historic colonial-era Government House and the adjacent botanical gardens, home to a small zoo and aviary.
Suggested Time to Spend
