Escape Hong Kong's urban frenzy on Lamma Island, a car-free haven where hiking trails, seafood restaurants, and laid-back beach vibes replace skyscrapers and traffic. Just a 30-minute ferry ride from Central, Lamma offers a glimpse of a slower-paced island life, with fishing villages, hillside walks, and a bohemian spirit that has attracted artists and nature lovers for decades. The island's two main villages, Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan, are linked by a scenic family-friendly trail that takes you past beaches, temples, and stunning views of the South China Sea.
Highlights & What to See
- Family Walk from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan: This easy 1-hour trail winds through bamboo groves and past the Tin Hau Temple, offering panoramic views and a chance to spot wild boar.
- Hung Shing Yeh Beach: A calm, sandy beach perfect for a swim or picnic, with lifeguards on duty in summer and a nearby barbecue area.
- Seafood Feast at Sok Kwu Wan: Dine at one of the waterfront seafood restaurants, where you can pick your own fish and shellfish from tanks and have them cooked to order.
- Kamikaze Cave: A short detour from the main trail leads to this World War II-era Japanese naval store cave, now a dark and atmospheric spot for exploration.
- Lamma Fisherfolk's Village: An educational exhibition showcasing traditional fishing culture, with boats, nets, and a small museum housed in a restored stilt house.
- Yung Shue Wan Main Street: Browse quirky boutiques, bakeries, and Western-style cafés that give this village a relaxed, alternative feel.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lamma Island makes for an excellent half-day to full-day escape. Most visitors arrive in Yung Shue Wan in late morning, hike to Sok Kwu Wan for a seafood lunch (allow 1.5–2 hours for the walk with stops), then catch a ferry back from Sok Kwu Wan in the afternoon. For a more leisurely pace, spend the afternoon at Hung Shing Yeh Beach or explore the side trails to the island's southern beaches. If you want to catch sunset, take the later ferry back to Central; the island's restaurants and bars stay open until the last ferry leaves around 11:30 PM.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hong Kong Island: Combine Lamma with a visit to the vibrant neighbourhoods of Central, Sheung Wan, or Stanley on the south side.

- Lantau Island: Home to the Big Buddha, Ngong Ping 360 cable car, and the fishing village of Tai O.
- Po Toi Island: A remote island known for its rock formations, seafood, and hiking trails, accessible by ferry from Aberdeen.
- Repulse Bay: A popular beach and shopping destination on the south side of Hong Kong Island, easily combined with a Lamma day trip.
