Cheung Chau Island
Cheung Chau Island, a short ferry ride from Central Hong Kong, is a delightful escape from the city's skyscrapers. This dumbbell-shaped island is a vibrant fishing community where traditional junks bob in the harbour and the scent of dried seafood wafts through narrow alleys. With no cars allowed, the best way to explore is by foot or bike, weaving through temples, beaches, and rocky headlands that offer a glimpse of old Hong Kong.
Highlights & What to See
- Pak Tai Temple: A stunning 18th-century temple dedicated to the Taoist god of the sea, adorned with intricate carvings and a giant swordfish bone.
- Cheung Po Tsai Cave: A legendary pirate hideout – scramble through the low, dark tunnel where the infamous Cheung Po Tsai supposedly stashed his treasure.
- Tung Wan Beach: A popular sandy strip perfect for a swim or a lazy afternoon, with nearby cafés serving up cold drinks.
- Mini Great Wall: A scenic coastal walkway with quirky rock formations named after their shapes, like the 'Human Head Rock' and 'Vase Rock'.
- Seafood Feast on the Harbourfront: Feast on freshly caught crab, prawns, and squid at one of the open-air restaurants lining the waterfront – the 'typhoon shelter' style crab is a must.
Suggested Time to Spend
Cheung Chau can be enjoyed as a day trip, but an overnight stay reveals its quieter side. Spend the morning hiking the Mini Great Wall and visiting the cave, then relax on the beach before a seafood dinner. If you stay, catch the sunset from the hilltop lookout near the Youth Hostel. The ferry ride itself is part of the experience – about 35–55 minutes from Central Pier 5.
